“Rosemarie’s Life” is a touching 3D-animated short about an elderly WWII survivor. From the pain of being separated from her family as a little girl to her joyful reunion years later, Rosemarie’s profound experiences become a source of inspiration for her caretaker — and a reminder that a career in long-term health care is an opportunity to help others and become part of their story.
“We needed to convey pressure in this shot, so we animated in such a way that when the camera pans out in opening the shot, the Stasi officers move towards Mr. Adler. This countermovement flow relates to the idea clearly and quickly. The beautiful yellow storefront perfectly frames our characters, driving the attention to the subject of the scene.”
“We wanted the map shot to work like a theater stage. The spotlights guide us into the action while the hard shadows enhance the drama of the scene. It’s a special shot in the film because it breaks reality and visually breathes the narrative. The idea was to communicate that Rosemarie’s family is going from East Germany to West. We found a great way to pack all of these concepts into such a short shot!”
“The camera flies from one shot to another through really cool wipes, making the viewing experience feel seamless and effortless, immersing you into Rosemarie’s journey. Packing her rich life story into a 2:30-minute film was quite the undertaking. We hope you notice all the little movements — from the character animation to the clothing — don’t forget to look closely at the mother-in-law. So awesome!”
“Such an incredible story deserves incredible visuals. In this shot, so many details are alive with realism. BTW, how cool is the BMW?!!”
“This scene has a special atmosphere. The foggy day reflects a particularly hard moment in her life. The Stasi officers here were some of our preferred characters in the story. Their design is really unique; they’re tall and imposing with awesomely tiny feet!”
“We produced 50 characters in total. All of them were unbelievably unique and treated with craftsmanship. The icing on the cake was the cloth simulation. Watch and rewatch for this detail alone”
“We imagined that Rosemarie having to leave her son was by far the most painful situation for her. This shot depicts her long-awaited reunion with him. Such an emotional shot. It was so rewarding and special for us to capture her strength through her story.”
We storyboarded and created detailed picture-book scenes held together by fluid camera movements and clever transitions. This piece is a perfect example of the ROOF way of making films -- great storytelling, heavy design, and an unbelievable amount of details. It was also a great technical challenge with 22 environments, 50 characters, and an infinite amount of assets to produce. What you see is the end result of a meticulously planned and orchestrated project with an amazing team of talent. Hope you enjoy the process!
